Enrico Berlinguer, born on May 25, 1922 in Sassari, Sardinia, and died on June 11, 1984 in Padua, Veneto, was the general secretary of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) from 1972 until his death. He was above all the inspiration for the Eurocommunist movement, which was distinguished by its independence from the Soviet Union, which he was able to demonstrate from the 1970s. A visionary, he was at the origin of a historic compromise with the Christian Democracy that was not without influence on the evolution of all the communist parties, starting with that of the USSR… He is at the origin of the Italian Democratic Party, a center-left party.
